Why it's worth reconditioning carbide cutting tools

De ce merita reconditionarea sculelor aschietoare din carbura

Tudor Ioan Serban |

In many CNC machining workshops, worn tools are considered waste and are directly replaced with new ones. In reality, most solid carbide tools can be reconditioned multiple times, maintaining cutting performance and significantly reducing production costs.

Tool reconditioning is not just a simple sharpening. The process involves restoring the original geometry on CNC grinding machines, dimensional inspection, and, when necessary, reapplying industrial PVD coatings.

What cutting tool reconditioning means

The reconditioning process involves several technological steps:

• Initial tool inspection
• Dedicated CNC grinding of the active geometry
• Honing of cutting edges
• Chemical cleaning and preparation for coating
• Reapplication of PVD coating (e.g., AlTiSiN, TiAlN, DLC, etc.)
• Dimensional measurement and final inspection

Finally, the tool is prepared for reuse in production.

Real savings for companies

One of the biggest advantages of reconditioning is the reduction in tool costs.

In many cases:

• the cost of reconditioning is 50–80% lower than a new tool
• milling cutters can be reconditioned 2–4 times

• drills can be reconditioned up to 10 times

• the cost per machined part significantly decreases

For example, a 16 mm diameter carbide drill bit that costs approximately €80 new can be reconditioned for about €21.

Performance remains the same

If the reconditioning process is carried out correctly, the tool's performance remains comparable to that of a new tool.

There are cases where the performance of a reconditioned tool exceeds the original, as we can modify the geometry to better suit a specific type of processed material.

CNC grinding allows for precise geometry restoration, and modern PVD coatings (nACo, TiXCo, DLC, etc.) offer high resistance to temperature and wear.

The result is a tool that can be used again in production without major compromises.

Additional benefits

In addition to cost reduction, tool reconditioning brings other advantages:

• reduced raw material consumption
• reduced industrial waste
• optimized tool inventory
• predictable production costs

For these reasons, many industrial companies consider reconditioning an integrated part of their production strategy.
